Keshava Dance Festival 2011

Keshava Nrithya Shala is organizing a National ‘Keshava Dance Festival’- on July 21st & 22nd at the town hall, Bangalore. A unique cultural extravaganza, which explores and spreads the fragrance of Dance as an Art in India drawing inspiration from the deep roots of traditional Indian dance form prevalent over the centuries. It is held in the memory as a tribute to Natyacharya Vidhwan Guru H.R. Keshava Murthy - A National Awardee. Keshava Dance Festival is an exceptional event which displays the Rhythm, Harmony and Synchronization of eminent dancers from across India, each of whom have more than a decade of experience practicing their respective art forms. This Festival to its credit has professional artists from all over India who have won laurels from the spectators and positive critical acclamation who lift the performance to a different level and provides Mental Solace and Spiritual Feeling to the entire program. 

Keshava Nritya Shala (KNS) ®, Bangalore, is running since last 63 yrs and is one of the oldest institutes in Karnataka, imparting education in classical art forms and has been promoting rich art and cultural heritage of India. There is now “Samskruti Bhavan” for cultural exchange programs as well as Keshava College - affiliated to Bangalore University, providing degree in classical music & dance, headed by Karnataka Kalashree Guru B.K.Shyam Prakash. 
The aim is to provide a cultural platform to artists from Bangalore & across India to show case their artistic talents. More than 60 artists & 2,000 connoisseurs will come together & participate in the event. The artists of  international caliber will be coming from cities such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, New Delhi, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Vadodara, Mysore, Bangalore & Hyderabad.

KESHAVA NRITYA SHALA
KNS , a school of Classical Bharatanatyam was started in 1949, in Malleswaram, by Natyacharya Natya Vidwan Guru Sri H R Keshava Murthy , with the avowed objective of providing an opportunity to the young aspirant of this extension to develop their talents in Bharatanatyam and related arts.
Apart from imparting enducation on Bharatanatyam , the Nrityashala has produced about 50 Dance ballets like Megha Sandesha, Dashavathara, Parvathi Koravanji, Sri Channakeshava, Purandhara Krishna, Navarasa Ramayana, Mohini Bhasmasura, Sri Krishna Tulabhara, Panchavati, Shila Tapaswini, Seetharama Kalyana, Girikanya Parvathi, Thirukana Kanasu, Dheera Balakaru, Kare Bhantana Kalaga and Sri Kaveri Vaibhava etc.
The institution also started the Kannada Kavi Kavya Parampare series (A set of 18 great works from the renowned Poets of Karnataka) in the year 1995 with a unique attempt and the first of its kind to popularize Kannada Literature amongst the public through dance. It has been so well crafted by Mr H R Keshava Murthy by taking works from Kannada Literature spread over a vast span of 1500 years. The institution has already completed 15 dance dramas in this series and is presenting the subsequent Kavya in Feb 2007.
The Nrithyashala has trained about 4000 students, up to this day, and among them many have celebrated arrangetram. The school is training students for Junior, Senior & Proficiency (Vidwath) Grade of Examinations organized by the Karnataka Government and many have come out with State Level Ranks and First Classes, some of the pupils of the Nrithyashala have secured the Government of India Scholarships for higher
studies in Bharatanatyam and a few have toured in foreign countries as well. The Nrithyashala has the credit of having a collection of a wide books or art, history, musical instruments, costumes, stage properties etc.
In 1974 Keshava Nrithyashala celebrated its Silver Jubilee spread over the month of January 1974 comprising of cultural programmes dance artist's conference, dance exhibition etc., In 1976 artists of the Nrithyashala toured all over Rajasthan under interstate cultural exchange scheme. In 1978 January Nrithyashala celebrated "Natya Sapthaha" a dance festival for a week. In 1980-81 the Nrithyashala presented series of dance dramas (1 ballet every month) programme. In 1984 Nrithyashala produced a novel dance-drama "SRI KAVERI VAIBHAVA" which has won laurels from the public. In 1985 Keshava Nrithyashala celebrated Nritta, Nrithya, Natya Sapthaha; a seven day Dance-Drama Festival and an Academic symposium on Chaturvidha Abhinaya to mark 37thAnniversary. Keshava Nrithyashala presented a Scholarly Dance-Drama "KALIDASA KAVYA DARSHANA" in Sanskrit comprising of KUMARA SAMBHAVA, MEGHA SANDESHA and RAGHUVAMSHA.
On the occasion of the 38th Anniversary Nrithyashala had arranged a series of Lecture-demonstrations as an ANALYTICAL STUDY OF DANCE THEORY AND PRACTICAL in six academic sessions on the last Sunday of every month at the State Youth Centre. A three day Dance-Drama and Bharatanatyam Festival also had been arranged to mark 39th Anniversary. It is a matter of pride to announce that the Nrithyashala presented a
HISTORICAL DANCE-DRAMA " MAHATHMA YESU CRISTHA". A two day Dance-Drama Festival was held to mark 39th Anniversary.

To mark the 40th Anniversary, A four Day Dance Festival evening was held with Dance-Drama, Bharatanatyam, Folk Dance and Group Dance evenings were held.
In 1992 the artists of Nrithyashala toured over Germany and London and presented Bharatanatyam, Veena Concert and Lecture demonstrations. In 1994 a new Dance-Drama "Shakuntala" was produced and presented.
The year 1995 was a special remarkable year in the history of KNS where in the Institution started a new series "KARNATAKA KAVI KAVYA PARAMPARA" to bring our essence of Kannada Literature Kavya of 18 Poets. This was widely accepted all over Karnataka both by the Govt and the public, some of which have already completed 20 shows each. The institution has already completed 15 dance dramas in this on going series.
KNS organized a special seminar on Kannada Compositions to the field of Dance in the 2004 with the aim to bring more Kannada work for Dance and there by reach the art connoisseur better.  In the year 2005 the institution organized "Bharatanatyam Aduvu Seminar" with the aim to codify and document all the prevalent Dance styles in Karnataka. The respective Bharatanatyam Aduvu DVD was released in the year 2006. Every year the Institution, issues certificates to the Students who complete "Certificate, Diploma" and "Degree Courses" from Keshava Nrithya Shala. There is a never ending of students who have completed arrangetram through our institution.  Presently the institution is being run under the able guidance and Tutelage of Guru Sri B K Shyam Prakash (son and disciple of H R Keshava Murthy). With the goal of continuing the family tradition and with the aim to impart the training in pure form of Bharatanatyam the institution is working for the past 63 years.

Keshava dance festival is organized annually at national level in the city of melting cultures – “Bangalore”. In the memory of  Natyacharya Guru Shri H.R.Keshava Murthy, this festival organized by Keshava Nritya Shala, with an aim of preserving and promoting Indian classical dance.

The said festival is indeed a tribute to the late master and at the same time a way in which his dream of providing opportunity to artists to showcase their authentic creativity is achieved.

“Keshava Dance Festival” is a brain-child of Guru B.K. Shyam Prakash (Bharatanatyam exponent & son of Guru H.R.Keshava Murthy) Founder “Keshava college of music and dance”.

In association with Keshava Nritya Shala – one of Karnataka’s oldest dance schools running since last 63 yrs and “Samskruti Bhavan” – Keshava Dance festival provides platform for different dance forms & artists to come and treat the city dance lovers and showcase their artistic talent.

Applications this year are invited from artists of various Indian classical dance forms from India and abroad.
